Student Travel Insurance versus General Travel insurance

Insurance acts as a back-up that compensates the insurance holder against misfortune. There are many different types of insurance plans like; Homeowner insurance, Hurricane insurance, Health insurance, Insurance for the elderly, etc. which act against certain types of misfortunes.

For a student aspiring to study overseas, there is an exclusive Study Abroad Travel Insurance that covers most of the issues which may arise during the student's overseas study tenure. Such an insurance plan is tailor-made to take care of issues such as baggage theft, flight delays, medical emergencies, even death, and repatriation. Although the general travel insurance has many similar clauses to student travel insurance, both have some significant differences.

  • The student travel insurance takes care of luggage loss and passport theft and provides reimbursement in accordance with the policy. This is also covered under general travel insurance.
  • Compensation due to travel delays is reimbursed taking into account the inconvenience caused. This differs considerably in case of student travel insurance and general travel insurance. The general travel insurance covers the cost of bounced back hotel or tour bookings.
  • The tenure of the Study Abroad Travel Insurance ranges from 1 to 7 years depending upon the course of study and the insurance provider. The general travel insurance covers the entirety of the trip duration.
  • The student travel insurance covers tuition fee payment when there is a study interruption due to hospitalization. The policy will reimburse the tuition fee that has been paid in advance if the candidate is forced to discontinue his studies due to reasons covered under the scheme like terminal illness, the death of immediate family member, etc. Such features are not covered under the general travel insurance plan.
  • Payment of remaining tuition fees of the insured student in case of the death of his sponsor is covered under the Student travel insurance.
  • The student travel insurance also bears the cost of a round trip for the student, when the student needs to visit his home country, in case of the death of an immediate family member.
  • In case the insured student is hospitalized and has no one to take care of him, for a significant period such as 7 days, the round trip cost for an immediate family member is covered.
  • Emergency medical care and hospitalization, repatriation of remains in case of death are covered in case of both, student travel and general travel insurance.
