Reasons for Rejection of Applications for the National Overseas Scholarship

With the view of promoting meritorious students belonging to the backward community like scheduled caste and scheduled tribe for pursuing overseas education, National Overseas Scholarship Scheme was launched. Running since past many years, the scheme has offered financial assistance to umpteenth students inviting fresh applications for 100 slots every year. However, out of many received applications from students, a huge number of them are rejected. Given in this article is a brief account of what is National Overseas Scholarship and the reasons for rejection of the application from the perspective of general awareness.

National Overseas Scholarship:

Under this meticulously framed scholarship scheme only those SC and ST candidates can apply who fulfil the basic requirements which are as follows:

  • A student must have secured admission in a foreign accredited university or institution only.
  • The academic score secured at the bachelor and master level should not be less than 55%.
  • The candidate should not be older than 35 years of age.
  • A candidate with at least 2 years of work experience in the related field is preferred for the scholarship.
  • The family income should not exceed 6 lakhs per annum.

The scheme of National Overseas Scholarship for ST students and SC as well, reserves 30% of seats for women to motivate them for pursuing higher education.

Reasons for Rejection of Applications

Before we delve into the subject, a basic conceptual understanding about sorting of application is of paramount importance. Graduates may self-nominate for the scholarship while the link is active during the year. The invitations are garnered throughout the financial year commencing from the month of April. The candidate must keep on visiting the page for activation of link and any new notification.

Sent in applications are processed based on the eligibility criteria and sorted.Students applying for Bachelor's courses are not eligible for the scholarship. Priority is given to students who have secured admission in universities amongst top 300 in the world as per QS World Ranking. An applicant must look for acceptance of its application form and approval of scholarship when the list is out. Such three to four lists are displayed out in the website stating the number of applications selected and rejected.

Some of the reasons for the rejection are-

  • The academic score during bachelor or master is less than 55%.
  • The candidate belongs to ST category but has filled in the application form under scheme for SC students.
  • An applicant has pledged scholarship for music and arts studies abroad. As per the scheme, students applying only for the following fields are considered further in the process.
  • Engineering and Management
  • Pure Sciences & Applied Sciences
  • Agricultural Sciences and Medicine
  • Commerce, Accounting & Finance
  • Humanities & Social Science
  • Documents required to be upload during the first phase of the selection process was not done. These documents are- English translation of caste certificate, proof of admission to the foreign university like an offer letter or proof of application, income certificate, birth certificate, etc.
  • The candidate has filled in misleading information.
  • Marksheets for the academic year have not been uploaded during the first round of selection.
  • No Objection Certificate is not uploaded by the student who is employed.
  • Dual application has been sent.
  • Income of parents exceeds 6 lakhs per annum.

The student should abide by the eligibility criteria and instructions mentioned in the scheme. Missing instructions can lead to refusal of scholarship.
