Government Scholarship for Study Abroad: Scheduled Tribe

Ever since the Independence, the Indian National Government has enacted many progressive legislations, programmes and schemes for the development and empowerment of the Scheduled Tribes. In the field of education too, the Indian Government has come up with many schemes that mainly focus on the upliftment of the scheduled tribes by providing financial aids through scholarship.

Scheme of National Overseas Scholarship for ST Students is an initiative by the Ministry of Tribal Affairs. Let us understand the main objective of this scholarship.

It is to provide scholarship for students who want to pursue their higher education abroad for Master's studies. Bachelor level course in any discipline are not covered under this scheme.

The fields for which scholarship is granted are:

Engineering
Management
Economic or Finance
Pure Science
Applied Science
Agriculture
Medicine
Humanities
Social Science

Eligibility Criteria for this scheme is:

55% relevant master's degree or equivalent grade in
Below 35 years of age
Rs. 6 lakhs per annum family income for such candidate or parents
Not more than 1 child of the same parents will be eligible along with a self-clarification
An individual can be awarded only once and cannot be considered for the 2nd or subsequent award

Number of Awards given:

Through this scheme, 20 scholars will be selected every year. The complete distribution of these 20 awards is as below.

Scheduled Tribes - 17
Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Group (PTG) - 03
Total - 20

Also 30% of the awards that is nearly 6 awards are reserved for the girl students from the scheduled tribe caste.

Duration of scholarship:

Financial assistance under this scholarship is provided till you complete the entire course/research. Depending on the duration of the Master course, which varies country to country, the duration of scholarship is 1 or 2 or 3 years.

Expenses covered under this scheme of scholarship:

Annual Maintenance Allowance

The annual Maintenance allowance in US will be USD 15,400 and for UK it will be Pound 9,900. For rest of the countries USD or equivalent rates would be applicable.

Annual Contingency and Equipment Allowance

The Annual Contingency and Equipment Allowance for books, essentials, apparatus, study tour, etc will be covered for the following countries.

USA: USD 1532

UK: Pounds 1116

For rest of the Countries: USD or equivalent rates would be applicable

Poll Tax - Total value will be covered
Visa Fees - Total value in INR will be covered
Incidental Journey Expenses - USD 18.70 or equivalent to INR
Fees - Complete fee as per actual
Medical Insurance Premium - Complete amount as per actual
Cost of Air Passage - To and fro tickets from home country (city) to study abroad destination (nearest place to University) will be provided
Local Travel - Second class or Coach class railway fare from the port of disembarkation to the place of study and back will be provided; bus fare is provided in case of no railway provision; ferry crossing if applicable
All the scholarship holders who are pursuing education abroad would also be eligible to receive the revised rates as approved in the scheme and it modifies form with prospective effect.
